SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison and candidate for Congress (IL-08) was outraged to learn that a personal friend, United States citizen Sunny Naqvi, was detained by CBP along with five others upon arrival at O'Hare International Airport on the morning of Thursday, March 5th. Following 30 hours of detainment at O’Hare, her phone began pinging from the ICE Detention Facility in Broadview, IL.

Morrison ignited the fire and helped in organizing a protest Friday evening which carried into the night at Broadview, which also included congressional candidates Kat Abughazaleh (IL-09) and Reed Showalter (IL-07). Naqvi’s family was present with her birth certificate and were denied entry to the facility. As the protests grew, it is believed that Naqvi and the five others were transported to the Dodge Detention Facility in Juneau, WI, where they were eventually released, separately from one another, in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 7th.

Yesterday, Morrison, Naqvi’s attorney; her sister, Sarah Afzal; Abughazaleh; and Showalter held a press conference outside the Broadview facility demanding transparency and accountability from DHS. “No one should need to have an elected official have to further someone’s voice when their constitutional rights are being impeded,” Morrison said. “I’m glad I was able to help in this moment.” Leaders are now demanding answers and accountability from DHS.

Yesterday’s press conference has gained significant local and national attention, which is referenced here for more details on this developing story.
