Affordability

If you work a full week in this country, you should be able to afford housing – you should be able to put healthy food on the table, send your kids to college, and access high-quality, affordable health and mental health care. I don't think that is too much to ask in the richest nation in the world. But right now, it feels out of reach for my generation.

This is work I’m already doing in Cook County, where I expanded the rights of 245,000 suburban Chicago renters by protecting them against illegal lockouts and outrageous move-in fees. I created Cook County’s first Office of Behavioral Health to fill every gap in the mental and behavioral health space for nearly 5.2 million residents, and we’ve invested millions to build single-family homes in low-income neighborhoods.

But the county can’t do it alone — we desperately need the federal government to step up. In Congress, I’ll tackle the cost-of-living crisis by:

    • First, we’re decades behind where we need to be on building housing locally. Simply put, to make housing more affordable, we’ve got to build more housing. That starts with eliminating Trump’s tariffs on imported construction products, which are crushing our ability to expand the housing pool locally. In Congress, I’ll fight to make it harder for the president to unilaterally impose tariffs, which are causing prices to soar. We also must dramatically increase federal investments in local communities to empower them to expand their housing pool and improve public housing.

Second, every family in this country should have access to high-quality, affordable child care. Right now, the skyrocketing cost of child care is prohibiting countless Americans from starting or growing their families – and the families who choose to pay the outrageous costs themselves are being crushed financially every month. In Congress, I’ll fight to guarantee universal Pre-K, and I will fight for increased Federal funding to draw down on the cost of child care. We can do this by fixing are tax code so high income earners pay their fair share, and utilizing these dollars to invest in lower cost child-care centers for communities across the country.

Finally, no one should have to go into debt or wreck their credit score just to get a college degree. In Congress, I’ll make sure that every American – no matter who you are or where you come from – can access high quality higher education.

    • Our health care system is broken – and it’s been this way for far too long.

In Congress, I’ll support achieving Universal Healthcare by first creating a public health insurance option for all Americans to ensure everyone can afford and access high quality health care, and I’ll relentlessly hold health insurance companies and Big Pharma accountable for their role in making health care costs for Americans so incredibly expensive.  I’ll also be a fierce advocate for expanding access to mental and behavioral health care and incentivising individuals to pursue jobs in the health care field without the fear of accruing tens to hundreds of thousands in debt that they will never pay off, which includes   increasing wages for so many who are underpaid in the  health care workforce.

It’s also critical that Democrats win back the House and the Senate to not only reverse the Trump administration’s devastating cuts to Medicaid before they happen – we also must expand Medicaid to cover even more working families and fight to expand and strengthen the Affordable Care Act, which Donald Trump and his Republican allies have desperately sought to gut for years.

    • For too long, giant corporations have made everyday products more expensive for working families simply to line their own pockets. Now more than ever, Congress must hold giant corporations accountable for jacking up prices and making our cost-of-living crisis worse. In Congress, I’ll not only ensure that our current laws against monopolies are followed – I’ll fight relentlessly to strengthen regulations and oversight of the wealthiest and most powerful companies.

Small Businesses and Working Families

Small business owners are getting crushed by soaring costs, and families are being forced to work too hard for too little. As the son of a small business owner, I know it’s time for billionaires and Wall Street to pay their fair share so we can ease the burden bearing down on our small businesses and put more money in the pockets of hard-working families.

I have a proven track record of delivering results for Main St. and working families. As a county commissioner, I created a nationally recognized small business one-stop-shop, securing $88 million to help entrepreneurs and aspiring small business owners access the resources they need to start or grow their businesses.

But the county can’t do this alone. In Congress, I’ll stand up for Main St. by:

    • It’s critically important that we make it easier for aspiring small business owners in this country to get a loan so they can start and grow their business and help grow the middle class.

In Congress, I’ll fight to boost support for Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs) and for targeted reforms to the Small Business Administration (SBA) to help new entrepreneurs develop stronger business plans and navigate the loan application process more successfully.

I’ll also fight for investments in communities to create more local banks and grow wealth locally, including by championing programs that partner with mission-based lenders and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) to distribute SBA-backed funds to businesses in low-income, rural, and other underserved communities.

    • We must ensure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share so that we can lower taxes for our small businesses, while also strengthening our current laws that are intended to break up huge monopolies so that our small businesses have a fighting chance to compete.

For my generation, the American dream feels out of reach. It’s far past time that workers get a raise – that’s why I’ll fight relentlessly to raise the minimum wage and tie it to inflation and support investments that advance upward mobility for the lowest income Americans.

    • Flexible, expert advice when you need it. Book hourly support across a range of topics—from planning to problem-solving. This focused consultation will help clarify your goals, map out next steps, and identify opportunities for growth. In Congress, I’ll support publicly funded elections, reforming federal election laws that allow fundraising caps to be broken for candidates who are self-funding their own campaigns, banning federal officials from trading stock, and overturning Citizens United, which allows giant corporations to be classified as individuals and hold a disproportionate amount of power and influence over our elections.

    • We also must be proactive about regulating emerging technologies. In Congress, I’ll work to ensure that we are regulating AI to prevent harm, while simultaneously using it to innovate and not destroy. I’ll also engage with the developing landscape of blockchain and crypto to understand how federal policy can best protect consumers, foster responsible innovation, and advance upward mobility.

Fighting Trump

In the face of constant attacks on our democracy, we need a fighter who will stand up to corruption and Donald Trump and his MAGA allies as they tear the Constitution to shreds.

As a county commissioner, I’ve taken action to hold Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and Donald Trump accountable. I passed a resolution reaffirming Cook County’s unwavering support for due process and habeas corpus rights. I called for ICE agents to be unmasked and identified, and I successfully led Cook County’s efforts to ban ICE agents from government buildings. In Congress, I’ll continue standing up to Donald Trump’s authoritarian regime by:

    • We need to drastically curb the powers of Donald Trump and how his administration is enforcing our immigration laws. No one thinks people who are committing high crimes should be allowed to move freely through our streets. But people who are trying to follow the law are being captured and disappeared, and Americans are being detained solely based on the color of their skin. We haven’t had major immigration reform in the last 50 years, and it’s critical that we find pathways for legal status for individuals who are following our laws, contributing to our tax system, and benefiting all Americans.

In Congress, I’ll fight to unmask ICE agents and require them to be identified, wear body cameras, and only take people they have a legal warrant to detain. I’ll also demand an investigation into every law ICE has broken.

    • I created Cook County’s new Office of Mental and Behavioral Health, which receives 50% of its funding from the federal government. If Democrats don’t win back the House and Senate and the Trump cuts to Medicaid go into effect in 2027, there will undoubtedly be the needless loss of life. The Trump administration has also stripped funding away from the Brookfield Zoo simply because a program had the word “diversity” in it – which referred to the critical research of “biodiversity.”

It’s sloppy work, and I’ve called out the Trump administration over and over again, sounding the alarm about what these cuts will do for the people of Northern Illinois.

In Congress, I’ll ensure that congressionally authorized dollars aren’t stripped away by a dangerous, callous president – and that starts by supporting the Congressional Power of the Purse Act.

    • I graduated from law school in 2024 and passed the Bar in February of 2025. I didn’t spend five and a half years in law school just to see our constitution put in the paper shredder. We should all be terrified by Donald Trump’s weaponization and politicization of the justice system.

In Congress, I’ll support the Protecting Our Democracy Act and fight for legislation that guarantees an independent Department of Justice.

    • In Congress, I’ll fight to make it easier for Americans to vote and stop Donald Trump’s and Republicans’ disgusting crusade against voter access laws across the nation, which includes requiring voter IDs and attacking vote by mail. I’d also support making Election Day a federal holiday. Language access is also important. In Cook County I expanded language access on the ballot from four to twelve languages, making our county the second most language inclusive in the nation.

Safer and Healthier Communities

The health and safety of our communities is the foundation to ensure that every American has the opportunity to thrive – but as we’ve seen time and again from the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress, the rights and safety of seniors, veterans, disabled individuals, immigrants, and the LGBTQ+ community are under constant attack, and the devastating effects of climate change are getting worse by the day.

In Congress, I’ll protect our most vulnerable, strengthen civil rights for all, and safeguard our environment by:

    • Our seniors and veterans have served our nation and communities, and they deserve nothing less than our unwavering support and the highest quality of care.

In Congress, I always fight to protect Social Security, and I’ll be a fierce advocate for not only strengthening Medicare – I’ll push to expand it to cover essential dental and vision benefits. I’ll also work to ensure nursing homes and elder care facilities are adequately staffed and resourced, including by establishing and enforcing proper nurse-to-patient ratios, implementing trauma-informed care, and enacting higher penalties on individuals who cause any harm to seniors.

I’ll also demand that we reverse Republicans’ cuts to the VA and dramatically expand housing and job opportunities to eliminate veteran homelessness in our nation. It is wholly unacceptable that tens of thousands of veterans are homeless on our streets and lack adequate support and resources. For too long, America has fundamentally failed to care for those who have served. We must expand opportunities to retrain retired veterans to help them reemerge into our society and expand access to veteran hospital benefits.

    • The promise of equal protection under the law for all Americans is non-negotiable. An assault on the rights of one group is an assault to all of us.

In Congress, I’ll be an unyielding voice dedicated to protecting the fundamental civil liberties of every person, including the rights of our LGBTQ+, immigrant, and disabled communities. These protections are cornerstones of American democracy and must be strengthened, not curtailed.

    • The health of our planet is inextricably linked to the health of our children's future. We must act decisively and rapidly to address the climate crisis and ensure technological advancement serves humanity, not destroys it.

We need a bold and clear national strategy on the environment and climate change, with a clear pathway to speed up our move to become carbon neutral. In Congress, I’ll fight to return grants for electric vehicles and invest significantly in solar power initiatives to promote clean energy adoption.

Labor and Workers’ Rights

I’m the proud grandson of immigrants who came to America to build a better life, selling produce out of a truck and eventually growing it into a restaurant in Norwood Park that my mom and aunt still own and operate to this day.

My connection to labor runs deep. My father belonged to IBEW, my uncle was a plasterer, and my fiancé is a member of IAM. I know firsthand how critical unions are for working families and believe that every American who puts in a hard day’s work should never struggle to get by or feel their livelihood is in someone else’s hands.

As a county commissioner, I’ve always stood with labor by supporting every prevailing wage and labor contract presented to the Cook County Board, publicly backing multiple unionization efforts in partnership with AFSCME, joining SEIU members on the picket line, endorsing legislation in Springfield aimed at protecting and strengthening unions, and always maintaining an open, personal line of communication with every local Carpenters Union.

In Congress, I’ll use every tool at my disposal to support unions – which are the backbone of the American working class – by:

    • In Congress, I’ll support increasing the minimum wage and tying it to inflation. We also must make it more affordable for Americans to access the skills training they need to fill critical gaps in our workforce in specific industries, especially   health care and social work, construction and transportation, leisure and hospitality and wholesale and retail trade industries.

Now more than ever, we must invest in our shared futures – because every time we elevate someone out of poverty, the entire community benefits economically.

    • In Congress, I’ll support the PRO Act and fight to ban right-to-work laws. I’ll also support legislation to create a federal prevailing wage framework that can be implemented regardless of state-specific prevailing wage laws, and I’ll strengthen laws that protect a worker’s right to form a union and federal enforcement laws that allow workers to fight back against retaliatory employer actions. I’ll also protect the rights of all American workers to collectively bargain.

    • In the richest nation in the world, everyone should have access to high-quality public education. This should be a right for all – not a privilege.

In Congress, I’ll not only support universal Pre-K and early childhood education –  I’ll also fight for legislation that fully funds public education nationally and for investments to make sure that higher education is affordable to those who want to continue their education, including by creating incentives for Americans to access the training they need to secure jobs in industries facing critical labor shortages.

Reproductive Rights

Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are waging a full-on assault on reproductive rights – and for too long, Democrats have stood on the sidelines while the right to choose has been slowly stripped away. Now more than ever, we must take bold action to stop the war on reproductive freedoms.

As a county commissioner, I made reproductive health a protected class for nearly 5.2 million people, ensuring that reproductive health care no longer can be a factor when applying for a job or a home. I called out corporations that funded the campaigns of politicians who sought to roll back reproductive rights, and I called on Cook County Health to expand reproductive health care access within our current system. I was also proud to earn the endorsement of Personal PAC in my previous two elections.

In Congress, I’ll stand up for the right to choose by:

    • As a county commissioner, I protected an individual’s reproductive health choices from discrimination in housing and employment. In Congress, I’ll support legislation that codifies Roe v. Wade – and I’ll always stand up for a person’s bodily autonomy.

    • Maternal morbidity – which the World Health Organization defines as any health conditions attributed to and/or complicating pregnancy and childbirth – is higher in the United States than any other industrialized nation. This is completely unacceptable, and ensuring access to affordable health care is critical to reversing this alarming trend.

In Congress, I’ll support boosting investments that help ensure all women and birthing people have access to maternal health clinics. I’ll also guarantee that contraceptives, PREP, and doxy-prep are affordable and accessible to all, and I’ll protect the ACA, especially the provision requiring health insurance companies to cover birth control.

    • Education is power – and it’s never been more important to ensure Americans have access to age-appropriate, science-based health education.

In Congress, I’ll fight to ensure that age-appropriate health education is well funded and accessible – because the successful, long-term development of a child starts with families establishing strong, healthy relationships and making informed decisions. Age-appropriate health education protects youth by helping them learn how to be good partners and understand appropriate and/or inappropriate behavior in a relationship. Every parent cares about the safety and health of their children, and ensuring that youth understand consent, and the importance of reporting inappropriate behavior by peers and adults. We must also increase funding to provide information to expecting parents so that they have the resources they need to safely and successfully raise a child.
